Background

We are the science partner on three NRCS Climate-Smart Commodities projects working to establish sustainable, land-based economies.

  1. Creating regional 'hubs’ of partner ranches

  2. Implementation or enhancement of climate-smart livestock production activities. This involves measuring ecosystem services, especially soil carbon sequestration.

  3. Marketing and promoting livestock and ecosystem services to generate income for rural communities.

We envision a circular, land-based economy that distributes value equitably to assets as they move through the supply chain, sustaining the people and places that feed us.

Our Role

Working Lands Conservation will be designing experiments, sampling in the field, and quantifying accrued greenhouse gas benefits on partner ranches.

Dr. Jessica Murray traveled to New Mexico and Colorado three times this summer for scouting and our first round of soil sampling! Thank you to the wonderful producers who engaged with us and hosted us on their properties and allotments. We feel so lucky to work with amazing folks in beautiful places!

Now, we have lots of soil in our lab to process this winter! Stay tuned for more updates.
